Keyloggers Used in $400,000+ Theft

"Sholar said the unauthorized transfers appear to have been driven by 'some kind computer virus.'"

This is how Walt Scholar, County Attorney of Bullit County, Kentucky, describes what lead to $415,000 being stolen from Bullit County's bank.

A malicious trojan keylogger is apparently to blame, but the cyber criminals definitely knew what they were doing. According to the Washington Post's "Security Fix" story on the trojan,
"'...the criminals stole the money using a custom variant of a keystroke logging Trojan known as "Zeus" (a.k.a. "Zbot") that included two new features.

'The first is that stolen credentials are sent immediately via instant message to the attackers.

'But the second, more interesting feature of this malware, the investigator said, is that it creates a direct connection between the infected Microsoft Windows system and the attackers, allowing the bad guys to log in to the victim's bank account using the victim's own Internet connection.'"

It doesn't really get much uglier than that, as that's enough to defeat all but the most complex bank and credit card consumer protections. As the piece goes on to point out, it's really only the commercial banks that have the resources to protect their customers with even more robust mechanisms.
"Many online banks will check to see whether the customer's Internet address is coming from a location already associated with the customer's user name and password, or at least from a geographic location that is close to where the customer lives.

"By connecting through the victim's PC or Internet connection, the bad guys can avoid raising any suspicions."

All-in-all, it's really a truly fascinating story with excellent coverage in the Security Fix blog, and it's a reminder of four things to me:
  1. run antivirus software
  2. run a software firewall
  3. keep them updated
  4. listen to them when they complain

Twitter users beware: TwitViewer is on the loose

Yes, its one of those ‘we can help you find who is looking at your profile page’ applications again, except this time its Twitter. If you are paranoid about knowing who is viewing your twitter profile and such then you may have come across an application called TwitViewer already.

This Twitter app claims to help you find who’s “stalking” you on Twitter but actually, it is just tricking you. Twitviewer actually steals your login credentials when you submit your account details to them. You can say it is effectively an online spyware. Once Twitviewer has compromised your Twitter account, it will start sending notifications to all your Twitter pals to entice them into giving away their login credentials.

It is recommended that if you have visited sites similar to TwitViewer then you change your password immediately before they compromise your Twitter Account.

If you visit their website now then you may find a message along the lines of “Don’t know why all this happened but we’re shutting down … may be back up on another domain.” So please beware of any similar phishing attempts for your Twitter account.

How to stop receiving spam emails

When it comes to email hosting services, there is nothing worse or more annoying than receiving countless number of junk mails (aka spam) everyday. In this article we will examine how you end up getting so many junk mails and a number of preventive measures which you can take to stop receiving spam emails.

So what is a spam mail? Spam can be seen as a form of electronic messaging abuse, when people unethically send messages in bulk to an audience which never approved of such spam mails in the first place. Nowadays, the first thing which comes up to your mind when think of spam is one of the following topics: Money reclaims from banks, ‘personal’ emails from famous figures like Ban Ki Moon and Barack Obama, Viagra and Acai Berry sales. You wonder why they continue to send these unattractive emails despite the spammers knowing they will only get around 1-2% of the emails to be responded out of the million spam mails they send in batches. Unfortunately, that 1-2% is still economically viable for spammers which is why the volume of spam continues to increase day by day.

Spam is not just felt in the email world, you will find spam on websites, forums, mobile phone texts and even video sharing websites such as Youtube. According to security firm Mcafee, spam volume has increased by as much as 141% since March. So why are the government and internet firms not taking any action to stop the increasing volume of spam? In truth, they are except you can say they are putting in little effort to tackle a gigantic problem. Another problem is cooperation and uniformity. There will be large internet service providers which take every step to ensure their service is free of spam, while you also have unknown internet service providers who provide a place for spammers which is equivalent to a safe haven. A few years ago, the internet account of a spammer shut down and the volume of spam reportedly dropped by over 25%, just by removing that account alone. However, the spam volume picked itself up and started increasing after the spam operation transferred to an internet service provider with less stringent regulations.

Spam mail preventive measures

So what can we do as normal computer users to tackle this increasingly worrying spam problem? Firstly, there are many basic steps which you can take to ensure that you are receiving no spam emails at all. One of the main ways in which spammers collect email addresses is by either using a technique known as email harvesting or create bogus websites which require prospective users to submit their email addresses. The next time you register for an online account, read the website’s privacy policy rule carefully. Ideally, you only want to sign up for a website which states that they will never give out your email address or personal information to third party users. If you follow this basic guideline then you really should not be receiving any junk mails at all.

If you are already receiving a handful of spam then consider installing an anti spam appliance. anti spam filter are available in both appliance and software form. You have anti spam appliances like Barracuda Networks which are suitable for blocking spam at a large scale. If you are only preventing spam in one computer then you can install free spam filters or use email hosting services like Gmail which already comes with an effective spam filtering feature. anti spam appliances are most costly but they are actually cost effective if you consider the volume of spam you will get without one.

If you have a website set up with a contact us page then make sure your email address is not visible anywhere. Lazy people will set up a mailto: and link a button directly to your email address but do not do the same! Use php coding instead which will ensure that spammers will have a difficult time locating your email address on the website.

Research into the Workings of Real Botnets

For starters, let's define what a botnet is:

Loosely speaking, a botnet is a network of computers which have been taken control of for the purpose of malicious use.

Typically, PC users whose computers have been compromised are complete unaware their computers are infected with malware. Once infected, the botnet operators have complete control of your computer and are able to use it to do their bidding, almost always without your knowledge.

Botnet operators use compromised PCs for things like: stealing credit cards, stealing banking passwords, sending spam, and identify theft. If your computer has been infected, your machine might be sending spam, and chances are you'd never know it.

"WHAT?! How is this possible?" some users ask. "Wouldn't I know when someone was on my computer when I'm already on it?"

No. You wouldn't know. Here's why:

There are a ton of different things running at all times on your computer without your knowledge. For instance, there's your network card that makes it possible for you to connect to the Internet; there are your USB ports that make all sorts of things possible like printing; there are the drivers that make your keyboard, mouse, sound card, and video card(s) work.

Each of these things is at work even though you don't know it. They all run silently in the background, (usually) obediently doing their respective job. You'd never really know your network card was receiving a signal, per se, you just know the Internet works.

Such is the case with botnet software: it works in the background, sending and receiving signals, all the while without your knowledge (especially if you're not running antivirus software.)

That's where this newly released botnet research data makes things interesting.

The folks at the Sandia National Labs in Livermore, California, are building a huge botnet research network of over 1,000,000 virtual machines on a Dell supercomputer.

With this research network, according to the New York Times, Sandia Labs plans to study how botnets work so they can be more effectively fought and defeated.

The reason it's so hard to figure out what's going on is because it's hard to get perspective on the networks. Sure, you might be able to see what's going on on an infected machine, or even a dozen, but given that botnets can easily exceed 1,000,000 computers, seeing what the entire network is doing (or at least a big chunk of it) is pretty much impossible.

"'When a forest is on fire you can fly over it, but with a cyberattack you have no clear idea of what it looks like," said Ron Minnich, a Sandia scientist who specializes in computer security.

"'It's an extremely difficult task to get a global picture.'"

Hopefully, the end result will be a much better perspective of how botnets work and a clearer understanding of what it takes to defeat them.

Taps and It Advantages

Aside from a roof, a tarp can protect other objects during a hurricane. A tarp can also be used as a temporary covering for a window to reduce debris entering the house. It can also cover a car or a truck or a seed store against high wind, rain, and debris. However, a tarp will not protect against heavy debris, such as large flying objects.

Hurricane traps should be durable, made of high density polyethylene or canvas. The material should be 100% resistant to water, grease, and dust and should be flexible enough not to get ripped in the wind.

Roof tarps involve not only a tarp but also several 2×4 pieces of wood, a hammer, and 3.25 inch nails. One end of the tarps should be wrapped in a 2×4 that is two feet longer than the width of the tarp. Both the tarp and the 2×4 should be against the roof before nailing down the 2×4. Another 2×4 should be used to sandwich the tarp, and the two 2×4s should be nailed together. The loose end of the tarp should now be stretched over the ridge of the roof and down to the other side. This end should be rolled with a 2×4 and then sandwiched with another 2×4 like the other side. Both should be nailed down. For the sides of the tarp, nail down additional wood strips ten inches apart but the tarp does not need to be rolled around these 2×4s.
