Disk Defragmenter
As you perform your daily routine, get regular updates from windows and various aplications, your hard disk starts to suffer. Data belonging to the same document gets split and spread all over the disk. [just like a library gets messy over time if no one tidy's up] This can dramatically slow down your hard disk access time, trying to retrieve scattered data.
By Defragmenting your hard disk regularly, files and data are re-arraged and tidied up into blocks.
To start the process:
Windows XP: Go to >>> Start >>> All Programs >>> Accessories >>> System tools >>> Disk Defragmenter.
Select DriveC - Action - Defragment.
[Vista users can schedule a time for this task.]

This may take several hours; its the sort of task you can leave running over night, just like the regular virus scan.
Reboot, and you have a speedier computer.
It is recommended that you have at least 30% free space on your hard drive. [if its over crowded you may want to condsider an external hard drive or uninstalling unused programs]
